Bank Defrauded WISCONSIN RAPIDS The First National Bank here was the third area victim of a ruse known as a pigeon drop, handing over $8,220 to a man posing as a Consolidated Papers Inc. executive. The incident last Friday "followed the same pattern" as similar frauds in Wausau last Thursday and Stevens Point Friday, according to Detective Lt. Donald J. Knuth, Wisconsin Rapids Police Department.

However, the description of the man involved in the fraud here does not match the one of a man who picked up a package obtained through the same ruse from a bank in Stevens Point from a taxi driver at the post office here the same day. The deliveries were just minutes apart, according to Knuth. The package from the Wisconsin Rapids bank was delivered to a Harold Johnson at the McMillan Library at 1:15. The package from Stevens Point was delivered at the post office at 1:30 to a man calling himself Al Schroeder. The First National Bank received a call from a man identifying himself as Harold Johnson, an executive with the Consolidated Papers at 10:30 a.

m. He asked the bank to package $8,220 in cash to be used for bonus payments to Consolidated employes. At 10:40 a. Consolidated Papers received a call from a Harold Johnson, who said he was with the computer section of First National, asking them to send a messenger to the bank to pick up a package he had prepared for them. A Consolidated messenger picked up the package at 12:15 p.

delivering it to the receptionist at Consolidated. A cab driver picked up the package and delivered it to the library. The man at the library was described as about 6 feet and 180 pounds, with brown hair and wearing a brown sports jacket. The man who picked up the package at the Post Office was described as wearing a blue-and-white checked sports jacket and having a mustache. The FBI is acting as a clearinghouse for the investigations of the three frauds in the area.

A conference of the three police departments involved has been scheduled. Council Adamant on Denying Exemptions WASHINGTON (AP) The Cost of Living Council is denying 'most of the requests it is receiving from the food industry for exemptions from the latest price freeze. Despite claims from more than 350 companies and trade' associations that the freeze is causing economic hardships, few will be permitted to hike prices, the council said Wednesday. "We will not take seriously horror stories that are not documented," said Bert M.

The council said it rejected 32 of the first 36 requests that were accompanied by claims the freeze was creating food shortages and threatening some food stores with bankruptcy.
